After our busy Wing Training Day schedule, I caught up with Cadets Lloyd, Holohan & Thorp, three of several of our cadets who went to NACATC (National Air Cadet Adventure Training Centre) Llanbedr, in North Wales, to take part in numerous adventure training activities, including kayaking, walking, mountain biking and more!
Llanbedr itself is a quiet village, which grew around the slate quarrying industry – a large industry in the north of Wales! Around Llanbedr are many sights, such as Neolithic Standing Stones and Bronze Age huts! As well as this, Llanbedr is home to an ex-RAF station – RAF Llanbedr – and the airfield is still active! Llanbedr is located around 2 miles from the north west Welsh coastline, near Shell Island. It also is in the national park of Snowdonia, a 823 square mile park in north wales, which is home to, you guessed it, the largest mountain in Wales – Mount Snowdon, which stands at 1,085m above sea level! Due to it’s simply amazing location, which brags both easy access to the sea and mountains, NACATC Llanbedr is in a perfect location for the activities which go ahead! Over the course of the week, the cadets from all over Cumbria & Lancashire Wing, took part in activities including kayaking & canoeing, mountain biking and a high ropes course – As well as earning their bronze navigation award!
“Sunday was the first day of activities, and we did walking. Mine and Cadet Trafford’s group was the only group to make it back on time, due to the others getting lost in the rain!” – Cadet Holohan“Kayaking was also a lot of fun, despite capsizing 6 seconds after getting in!” – Cadet Thorp“The high ropes was one of my favourite activities of the week – It was intense, but enjoyable with a 40+ ft drop at the end!” – Cadet Lloyd
