Inter-Wing Football Competition

Posted on Posted in Sports

Today, Cadet Corporals Jack Greenwood, Joseph Pym & Craig Sherrington represented Cumbria & Lancashire Wing’s football team at the inter-wing competition at Broad Oak Sports College, Bury. The competition was between C&L and the other North Region wings – Greater Manchester, Durham & Northumberland, South & West Yorkshire and Central & East Yorkshire.

The Team
The team consisted of Johnathan  Downie, Kev Brand, Chris Olive, Callum Waddington, Jack Lawson, Adam Haydock, Ed Miller, Harry Peake, David Thomas, Matthew McFadden, Jack Iddon, Rob Houlker, Tom Greene, Callum Sanderson, Oliver Stokes, and from 471 – Jack Greenwood, Joe Pym & Craig Sherrington!

Game 1: vs. Central & East Yorkshire – The first game saw C&L take an early lead, thanks to a goal by captain Chris Olive, before Central & East pulled one back – a powerful shot from outside the box taking a deflection and sneaking past Stokes in the goal. But the game was won by 471’s Craig Sherrington – placing the ball perfectly into the net with just minutes left!
Game 2: vs. South & West Yorkshire – Our great start carried on into the second match, after a tough game in the midfield, which saw no team have many real chances, but Cumbria & Lancashire dominate, gave us our second set of three points, thanks to a second-half header by Chris Olive.
Game 3: vs. Greater Manchester – The hardest game of the competition was against Greater Manchester, who, like us, had won their previous two. We were outplayed in the first half, seeing GM Wing net three goals, but after the break, we dominated, and played the better football, but were unable to convert any chances.
Game 4: vs. Durham & Northumberland – Our final game was a must-win against Durham & Northumberland if we were to have a chance of taking the top-spot over Greater Manchester, and that is exactly what we did! We played proper football, which resulted in two goals for Jack Greenwood, and a third from Kev Brand, to seal a three-nil win! Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough, as Greater Manchester also won their last game – so they took the grand prize.

Final Stats
> Played 4, Won 3, Drawn 0, Lost 1.
> Goals For: 6, Goals Against: 4. Goal Difference: +2.
> Top Goalscorer: Jack Greenwood & Chris Olive – 2 goals.
