On Sunday, 14 cadets from 471 Squadron went to Salt Ayre Sports Centre in Lancaster to participate in the junior sports trials for football, hockey, netball and rugby to play for the Cumbria & Lancashire Wing teams and represent the teams!
Football – Written by Corporal Joseph Pym
The football trials started with a warm-up, before being split into our positions. I, going for the left back position, trained with the goalkeepers and defenders. It was a great way to meet new people from other squadrons, such as Blackburn and Bamber Bridge! In the afternoon, we played several full matches against the other teams from the morning. In my opinion, all the cadets from 471 played brilliantly (despite some being too young for selection!)! Then, a draft team was selected, including Corporals Pym, Greenwood & Sherrington, before a large game took place on a full 11-a-side pitch between the 20-odd in the draft team and the other trialists. Overall, it was a great day, and I can’t wait to play for the wing next week!
Netball – Written by Cadet Kayleigh Cookson
First of all we did warm ups, followed by some exercises, before being split up into teams, and playing matches. In my opinion, the first game wasn’t as good as the second and third. It was a really good day and I got to meet some good people, who I can’t wait to meet again.
Selections
Congratulations are in order for Corporals Greenwood, Pym & Sherrington for being selected to represent the Cumbria & Lancashire Wing football team, and Cadets Cookson, Holohan & Markey for being selected for the wing netball team!
